IT Systems Engineer Job Description

IT systems engineers are information technology professionals who develop, install, deploy, test, configure, and optimize IT systems and networks used within a company or organization. They are responsible for monitoring system performance, resolving technical problems, and improving the overall operational readiness of a company's IT systems.

IT systems engineers can also assist design engineers with the development of various platforms and applications, and be responsible for performing design engineering of the company's IT system's physical equipment, components, analysis systems, interfaces, displays, and software solutions.

These professionals are usually responsible for ensuring that a full spectrum of clients' requirements are met, and they typically work closely with experts from related fields. 

Skills

IT systems engineers must have an advanced knowledge of systems engineering methodologies and be familiar with the project and product life cycle. An aptitude for technology is crucial. These professionals must always stay up to date with the developments relevant to their industry and area of expertise. 

IT systems engineers must have excellent communication skills, and be able to lead and coordinate technical and other staff. Interpersonal and client-facing skills and the ability to resolve problems are essential in this line of work.

Qualifications

IT systems engineers typically have at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software or computer engineering, information technology, or a related discipline, but professionals without an academic degree can find employment in the field if they have at least five years of relevant work experience. Further training is usually provided by the employer.

Employers will often look for additional professional industry and vendor certifications like Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), which prove the candidate's ability to design and implement the infrastructure for various business solutions. Most jobs in IT systems engineering require a strong knowledge of the technologies utilized by the company as well as expertise in any relevant engineering methodology and best practice.

Work

IT systems engineers can have a variety of duties, and these can vary depending on industry, the company that employs them, and the types of IT systems they are responsible for maintaining. These professionals typically assist a company with the development, installation, and maintenance of various technical components, system software, infrastructure, hardware, and peripheral equipment used across the enterprise. They replace outdated and malfunctioning hardware and software, track system capacity, and provide senior staff with reports on any issues that arise.

IT systems engineers can also be tasked with monitoring network services , recommending equipment replacements when the need arises, maintaining an inventory of all the devices used within the company, troubleshooting technical problems, and performing regular audits of the IT systems and applications used across the enterprise. They typically install software upgrades, monitor security systems for potential threats and intrusion signs, and make sure that security patches are always up to date.

IT systems engineers are also usually responsible for assessing the IT system performance and efficiency across the organization, identifying opportunities for optimization, and making recommendations on improvements to IT managers and other senior staff. They investigate and define system requirements and industry standards, and can also assist with customer contracts.
