HRIS Manager Job Description

HRIS, or human resources information systems, managers are professionals who specialize in areas of IT and human resources, and are responsible for capturing and managing employment data within a company or organization. HRIS managers deal with payroll administration systems and employee performance records among other things, and are responsible for procuring and implementing these systems as well as for operating them. The information technology aspects of the job, however, are not all there is to the position, as HRIS managers are required to have a full understanding of the information contained in these systems, as well as how the information relates to the company or organization which employs them.

HRIS managers can be responsible for a number of tasks, ranging from running recruitment metrics reports to entering data related to employee benefits choices. Along with supervising all the functions within the human resources information systems department, they typically work closely with members of the company's IT team to make sure that the HR data is captured accurately. They troubleshoot and resolve HRIS problems, research process flaws, recommend solutions or alternatives, and perform a variety of scheduled activities.

HRIS managers are also responsible for developing standard statistical reports for the company's senior staff, and for ensuring that accurate documentation process manuals are created and updated when required.

Skills and qualifications

HRIS managers must have at least a bachelor's degree in human resources management, organizational development, information technology, computer science, or a related discipline.

They must continually stay up to date with employment regulations and current practices, industry trends, employment laws and legislation, and all new developments relevant to their area of expertise.

HRIS managers must have an advanced knowledge of HR processes and data, as well as strong IT skills and knowledge of various reporting tools.

As this is a management-level position, these professionals must also have effective organizational, time management and communication skills. They must be able to lead a team of professionals, train employees, and deal with any employee concerns that arise.

Problem-solving skills are essential, as HRIS managers must be able to identify and resolve any problems that arise with the HRIS systems, as well as any problems between personnel.

Employers will generally favour candidates with at least several years of experience in HRIS implementation and administration.

Work

HRIS managers are hired to assist companies with the procurement and management of HRIS systems. They are typically the ones who determine the company's technological needs and then do the necessary research to identify the HRIS system that will best address those needs. Once the senior management approves and the system is purchased, HRIS managers are responsible for implementation and management. They will ensure that all the required software is installed and that it runs smoothly, and that all the functionalities and features work as intended. To that end, the managers will perform tests to make sure the system is operational before activating it.

HRIS managers can sometimes work closely with the system manufacturer to design specific elements of the software if the company requires the technology to be tailored to its specific needs. Once the HRIS system is in place, the HRIS manager will provide all end-users within the company with instructions, training, and assistance with the system's use.
